March 7th update

We met as a district jamboree committee last week.

I need responses for each troop member for the following:
- t-shirt size
- jacket size
- whether they want to volunteer as a Hometown News Correspondent

We would really welcome parent help in coordinating the meals for our April 23-25 campout.  Please let Ted, Denise, or I know if you want to volunteer your parent, or parents can volunteer themselves ;-)   There will be 2 breakfasts, one lunch and one dinner.

We are looking at options for getting our gear shipped to Ft. A. P. Hill.  Prior years they've used fruit-boxes instead of regular palates- they stack and ship well.  We could use about 12 of them.  Does anyone have contacts in the fruit industry?

We are planning on providing 2 t-shirts, a hat, a bolo,a neckerchief, patches, troop numbers, a duffel bag and a jacket for each participant.  (As if that wasn't enough, we are also providing the opportunity for a life-enhancing experience, but that probably goes without saying.)   Extra troop 710 t-shirts will be available for about $7 each, and there will be extra patches available for purchase  (~$2 each).  Patch trading is very popular.  Most boys buy 5-10 additional patches for that purpose.


We should be getting a 2nd national jamboree patch for everyone.  For your 3rd shirt or any other extras will need to be purchased out of the catalog you got in the mail, or from www.scoutstuff.org.  It looks like to access that you'll need your jamboree registration ID that was in the e-mail they sent out March 1st.

You'll want a day-pack (or small carry-on) that will hold a change of clothes and toothbrush that you will need for when we are touring.  We're not planning to check luggage, as they now charge extra for that, and we can ship everything we need for camping.  A preliminary equipment list can be found here:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ortscar/prelim_equipment_list.pdf

The Hometown News Correspondents are the only scouts with internet access at the jamboree.  They have the opportunity to share their jamboree experiences with their local media.  Newspaper & radio professionals will guide them in creating professional news stories from the jamboree.  We should have at least 2 slots for this available


I'm relieved to have the medical forms in (or at least I think they are all in now).  I'll let individuals know if national has problems with any of them.

The scout-shop uniform order is going forward.  We held off a bit on sending it in to allow more participation, since the discount is a one-shot deal.  We don't necessarily expect that everyone will have everything sewn-on just right by April, but we do expect that for May.  Rumor is that there are rank badges with 100 year anniversary on them.  The national jamboree shoulder loops are pretty cool.

We're working on getting rounders and shoulder patches made, and ordering gear.  We're going to use 5 gallon buckets for chairs, plastic folding tables, and car awnings.

We're thinking about what to do for a gateway.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who have all their money in.  We are working hard to be at or under budget.  If things work out with shipping, we may be in good shape.

status and plans

Denise is out of town dealing with aftermath of a tornado, but Ted and I got together today.

Here's some things we talked about:

• Tents - we have plenty of the blue tents with yellow flys. We will field test them at the April campout. I'm going to come up with bags for them. I think my wife and I will sew them, or I can get them from campmor for $7.50 each.
• Ted got really good price quotes for embroidered caps and silk screen shirts from a place in Klamath Falls. We're thinking 50/50 cotton/poly will wear better than 100% cotton. We'd like to get nylon jackets from there as well. There aren't many color choices, but we're thinking maroon for the jacket and base color of the cap. Ted has a great supplier for duffle bags as well.
• We'll do some junior leader training of the SPL, PL's, etc. at the April campout.  We'll have an agenda squared away for that whole weekend. We're thinking of starting 6 pm Friday (after dinner) with the understanding that people from Bend or beyond may have to get out of school a little early.
• I've gotten physical forms from just over 1/3 of the youth so far. The deadline is in 2 wks.
• The requirements for 1st class include passing the swim test, so everyone should be good to go.
• There will be some boys that still need 1st aid MB (or the red cross 1st aid class) which is required for the National Jamboree Emergency Preparedness Award.
• The uniform order is going forward
• many accounts are above $2500.  A few need catch-up.
• we'll practice setting up camp and our gateway at the camporall, as well as practice participating in various activities while camping as a troop.

6 and 1/2 months to go!

Important items:
1. Uniforms: the deadline for getting in on the discount uniform order has been changed to Feb 1st. That should still give us plenty of time, and popcorn proceeds (see below) should be available before then. We recommend 3 class A shirts, 2+ pair of scout pants, 6+ pair of crew length scout socks (red top or not). Use the form we handed out at the meeting, or here's a link for a copy you can print out:  order form
Fill that out, send it directly to the scout shop. BE SURE to INCLUDE a check or credit card number (with all the particulars). We will have "710" on our council shoulder patch, so don't worry about that or position patches. You will need rank badges on each shirt. Your order and payment need to be AT THE SCOUT OFFICE on, or before Feb 1st to get in on this.
SM Ted tip: label all your clothing items with your name before the trip.

2. Patches: we hear-by issue a call for a volunteer Graphics Artist to morph the rounder and shoulder patch designs that the troop chose into sharp bright colorful graphics files we can send to the embroiderer. Please contact ASM Denise (482-6891) if you may be able to help!

3. Proceeds from your Popcorn sales will be mailed directly to your home in about a week. For accounting reasons it needed to be done this way instead of going straight into your Jambo account. Most of you are well on the way to full payment. If you are under $2000 at this point please make plans to augment this. Dutch Brothers mug sale proceeds (for those that did this) will be distributed in the same way as popcorn.

4. Physicals need to be in to ASM Neil by February 15th. That's a Monday. Use the unique form that was e-mailed to you with your name on it.  This is not optional.

5. Gateway design team: please consider participating in designing our gateway. Go to pictures of gateways or google for examples. Please volunteer to lead or be on the design team.

6. Troop Positions: chaplain's aid and historian have not been assigned yet- if you are interested please speak up.

7. Our troop pre-jamboree preporation campouts will be 4/23-25 next to the scout office in Central Point, 5/21-23 as part of the council camporall, and please be advised we are considering an additional June camp.

This is a big committment from everyone, and we want to make the most of our experience at "The best, most exciting, fun-filled, safest jamboree ever!"
We realize there hasn't been much communication in the past month, and promise to improve on that in the future. We expect to send updates every couple of weeks.

We came to Crescent!

We all found the Crescent Community Center, and had a great meeting!  

We choose designs for shoulder and pocket patches, and covered lots ways we'll Be Prepared for the Jamboree!

Patrols worked on their flags and got to know each other.

I stopped at Natural Bridge on the way home.

Swim test certification

Scouts are required to complete their swim certification before the national jamboree. If they aren't swimmers, they will miss out on all the waterfront activities.  Please have your local scout leader fill out the following or e-mail me with this information.

·  The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.

·  Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.

Popcorn!

Hello Troop 710,


How popcorn sales are going? Hopefully you have had a chance to get out and start selling to friends and neighbors in you community. Remember you can be earning a 45% commission on your "Take Orders". If you choose to do show and sell with your own troop you will earn the commission rate of your troop, which can be anywhere between 30-37%. You decide which way is best for you.

Here are the important dates to remember:

Oct. 17th-turn in a copy of your take order sheet(s) to me at our Jamboree meeting. (If you are doing show & sell turn in your sheet(s) to your local troop popcorn kernel).

Nov.14th-Pick up popcorn at your district warehouse, places yet to be determined. There will be a copy of your sales sheets to help you pick your orders. Hopefully a volunteer from the Jamboree group will be at each location to help.

Nov. 29th-Turn in your money. You have 2 weeks to get your popcorn delivered. Please make a big effort to get it accomplished the first weekend. You may have to make phone calls ahead of time to schedule deliveries and collections of money. There are always a few customers that are hard to get a hold of to deliver.
I need a volunteer from Fremont, Rouring Rogue and Big Pines to help with popcorn distribution on Nov. 14th and collection of money on Nov. 29th. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. We have boys from 3 different districts. I need a volunteer to help at each distribution warehouse and to help collect money. Let me know if you are available for one or both dates.
I am currently working on setting up the boys accounts on line. In the next few days they will be able to get a password to use for relatives or friends who live out of you home area.
After the moneies have been turned into council they will apply the commission to your Jamboree account. If your family has already paid in full a check will be cut to you for any balance. Don't worry they will not keep the money.
